01 — WHAT IT IS

Sound waves that heal.

Therapeutic ultrasound sends high-frequency sound waves deep into your soft tissue. Not loud enough to hear -- but powerful enough to stimulate cellular healing, increase blood flow, and break down scar tissue that's been limiting your movement.

This isn't the ultrasound you picture from a pregnancy visit. There's no screen, no image. It's a treatment tool that works at the cellular level. The sound waves create micro-vibrations in the tissue, which generates gentle heat and mechanical effects that accelerate your body's natural healing process.

We use therapeutic ultrasound at our Jacksonville and Orange Park offices for everything from chronic tendonitis to acute muscle strains. It's especially effective for injuries that are slow to heal on their own -- areas with poor blood supply like tendons and ligaments that need the extra push to repair.

03 — HOW WE TREAT IT

How therapeutic ultrasound helps.

Deep tissue heating
Sound waves penetrate 1 to 2 inches below the skin surface, reaching muscles, tendons, and ligaments that heat packs can't touch. The warmth increases blood flow and relaxes tissue at the source of the problem.

Reduces inflammation
The micro-vibrations from ultrasound waves stimulate cellular activity and lymphatic drainage. Swelling decreases, waste products clear out faster, and the inflammatory cycle starts to break.

Accelerates healing
Ultrasound increases the rate of protein synthesis in cells, speeding up tissue repair. This is especially useful for tendon and ligament injuries where healing is notoriously slow.

Breaks down scar tissue
Chronic injuries build up scar tissue that restricts motion and causes pain. Therapeutic ultrasound softens and remodels scar tissue, restoring flexibility to areas that have been tight for months or years.

Is this the same ultrasound used in pregnancy?
Same technology, different application. Diagnostic ultrasound creates images. Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves at specific frequencies and intensities to heal tissue, reduce inflammation, and break up scar tissue. No images are produced -- it's purely a treatment modality.
What does therapeutic ultrasound feel like?
A warm, gentle sensation. We apply a conductive gel to the skin and move the ultrasound head slowly over the treatment area. You'll feel warmth building in the tissue -- like a deep, internal heat pack. It's comfortable and most patients enjoy it.
How long is a session?
5 to 8 minutes per area, typically. It's applied as part of your overall treatment session, not a standalone visit. Short, targeted, and effective.
What conditions respond well to ultrasound?
Tendonitis, bursitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, plantar fasciitis, scar tissue adhesions, joint stiffness, and chronic soft tissue inflammation. It's particularly effective for conditions where deep tissue needs to heal but isn't getting adequate blood flow on its own.
