Dry Needling in Jacksonville, FL

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling in Jacksonville, FL is one of the most effective treatments available for muscle pain, trigger points, and movement dysfunction — and it’s now offered at both Meridian Integrative Wellness locations.

Dry needling involves inserting thin, sterile needles directly into tight, knotted muscle tissue known as myofascial trigger points. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and energy pathways, dry needling is a Western, evidence-based technique grounded in musculoskeletal anatomy and neurophysiology. The needle creates a micro-trauma that triggers a healing response, relaxes the muscle, reduces pain, and restores normal range of motion.

Conditions Dry Needling Treats

Dr. Nhat Nguyen uses dry needling at our Jacksonville and Orange Park clinics to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Neck pain and stiffness — especially from desk work, poor posture, or whiplash
  • Chronic back pain — muscular tension and trigger points that contribute to spinal pain
  • Shoulder pain — rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder, and impingement syndrome
  • Headaches and migraines — tension-type headaches often driven by trigger points in the neck and upper back
  • Sciatica — piriformis muscle involvement that compresses the sciatic nerve
  • Hip and glute pain — deep muscle tightness affecting mobility and gait
  • Sports injuries — muscle strains, overuse injuries, and delayed recovery
  • Plantar fasciitis — calf and foot trigger points that contribute to heel pain
  • TMJ / jaw pain — masseter and pterygoid trigger points contributing to jaw dysfunction
  • Fibromyalgia — widespread trigger point activity causing systemic muscle pain

What Happens During a Dry Needling Session?

At Meridian Integrative Wellness, dry needling is always performed by a trained clinician following a thorough assessment. The process is straightforward:

  • Assessment: We identify the trigger points and muscle groups contributing to your pain
  • Needle insertion: Thin, sterile filiform needles are inserted into the trigger points — most patients feel minimal to no pain from the insertion itself
  • Twitch response: You may feel a brief, involuntary muscle twitch — this is a good sign that the trigger point has been activated and is releasing
  • Post-needling: Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal, similar to post-workout soreness. This quickly resolves and is followed by improved mobility and reduced pain

Sessions typically last 15–30 minutes and are often combined with chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, or rehabilitation exercises at our Jacksonville and Orange Park clinics.

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?

Both use similar needles, but the philosophy and application are completely different. Dry needling targets specific, anatomically-identified myofascial trigger points based on your musculoskeletal diagnosis. Acupuncture follows meridian pathways from traditional Chinese medicine. Dry needling is typically used alongside chiropractic care and physical rehabilitation as part of a Western medical treatment approach.
