Understanding Chiropractic Adjustments
A chiropractor is a specialist in spine and joint pain… kind of like a mechanic for your body.
Our chiropractor has spent years understanding the joints, spine and soft tissues of the body in order to help patients with all sorts of musculoskeletal pain.
This education allows them to also have the knowledge of various illnesses, conditions and injuries that affect them.
Chiropractic care focuses on relieving pain and discomfort associated with these specific conditions and injuries whether sciatica, herniated discs, migraines, fibromyalgia, auto accident injuries, work related injuries and much more.
We at Meridian Integrative Wellness believe in a natural and holistic approach that delivers authentic health care to all our patients.
What is an adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is also known as a chiropractic manipulation, spinal manipulation or manual manipulation.
It is a treatment used for a variety of injuries and pain relief.
A chiropractor applies manipulation to the area that has abnormal movement patterns or is failing to function properly.
The objective of this type of treatment is to reduce subluxations or restricted joints. The end goal and result is to increase range of motion, improve function or to reduce nerve pain and/or discomfort.
Oftentimes these subluxations can irritate the nerve tissue, cause pain or inflammation or completely stop the function of the area.
If it is left uncorrected for a long period of time, it can leave the body out of sync. When a chiropractor finds a subluxation, they will correct it with an adjustment.
There are many techniques that can be used to adjust the joints and your chiropractor will choose the most effective for your situation.
…but I’m afraid of the POP!
Many fear the loud pop associated with chiropractic adjustments.
The adjustment isn’t bone cracking, it is a joint that is opening up known as gapping the joint.
When this joint opens, the two surfaces are pulled apart (that were once stuck together with a sticky substance) and you hear this pop.
The pop itself is due to fluid known as synovial fluid that lubricates the joint.
The fluid is made of oxygen, CO2 and nitrogen. When the joint is opened up, this gas is released. Known as a cavitation, this release of gas is what makes the popping sound.
The relief that chiropractic care and adjustments provide is typically felt immediately. For complete relief, a few sessions may be necessary.
However, just one adjustment can lead to reduced pain, discomfort and/or pressure in the neck or spine.
What Can Chiropractic Adjustments Treat Effectively?
Research has proven that chiropractic adjustments have been successful for a variety of illnesses. Some of these include:
- Fibromyalgia: This condition causes patients to be hyper sensitive to touch. Chiropractic adjustments can help provide some relief as well as compression.
- Migraines/Tension Headaches: Oftentimes migraines are due to a variety of misalignments in the neck or back. Chiropractic adjustments can correct these irregularities and give some relief to migraine patients.
- Back/neck pain: The root source of the pain is identified first. Chiropractic adjustments can help correct issues with discs, nerves, muscles or joints.
- Accident injuries: Things such as whiplash can be corrected successfully with adjustments. Your musculoskeletal pain can be treated after a full examination is done to determine all of your injuries.
Other conditions that can be treated with chiropractic adjustments include pinched nerves, scoliosis, TMJ or sciatica, to name a few.
