Peripheral neuropathy.

Yes, we treat peripheral neuropathy in Jacksonville. Burning, tingling, or numb feet and hands — we find where it starts and build a plan around it. Southside Jacksonville and Orange Park.

01 — WHAT IT IS

Find where it starts. Then treat that.

Yes, we treat peripheral neuropathy. Meridian sees neuropathy patients at our Southside Jacksonville and Orange Park offices. We start by finding where the nerve problem comes from, then treat it with chiropractic care, spinal decompression, rehab and balance exercise, and functional medicine bloodwork when something inside the body is driving it.

No drugs and no surgery. The goal is less burning and numbness, steadier balance, and better sleep. Same-day appointments are available.

Peripheral neuropathy means the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are not sending signals clearly. Several different things can cause that. It usually starts in the toes and feet, and sometimes the fingers. It can build slowly over months.

02 — SYMPTOMS

What peripheral neuropathy feels like

Burning or pins and needles
A hot, prickly, or electric feeling in the feet or hands that often gets louder at night.
Numb feet or hands
Toes or fingers that feel thick, padded, or asleep, like you are wearing a sock that isn't there.
Poor balance
Feeling unsteady on your feet, especially in the dark or on uneven ground, because your feet are not reporting back clearly.
Sharp or stabbing pain
Sudden jolts of pain in the feet or legs, sometimes with no clear trigger.
Sensitive skin
Bed sheets or socks that feel uncomfortable against the skin.
Weak grip or tripping
Dropping things, or catching your toes on steps and curbs more than you used to.
— WHEN TO GET HELP RIGHT AWAY
Call 911 for sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, a drooping face, or trouble speaking. Go to the emergency room for numbness in the groin or inner thighs with loss of bladder or bowel control, or for weakness or numbness that is spreading quickly. If you have diabetes and a foot sore that will not heal, see your physician right away.
04 — GOOD TO KNOW

What causes it

Blood sugar. Diabetes and prediabetes are the most common drivers of peripheral neuropathy. High blood sugar over time irritates the long nerves that run to the feet.

Low vitamin B12. Nerves need B12 to work properly. Levels can run low with age, with long-term use of acid-reducing medication, and with diets low in animal foods.

Thyroid. An underactive thyroid can affect nerves and is easy to miss without the right bloodwork.

A pinched nerve in the spine. A disc or tight joint in the neck or low back can press on a nerve root and send numbness and tingling down an arm or leg.

A nerve trapped along the way. Nerves can be squeezed at the wrist, elbow, hip, or ankle, which produces symptoms in one hand or foot.

Medications and other factors. Some medications, including certain chemotherapy drugs, and heavy alcohol use can also affect the nerves.

Why finding the source changes everything

Tingling feet can come from a pinched nerve in the low back. Numb fingers can start in the neck. Burning in both feet often points to blood sugar or low B12. Many people have more than one of these at the same time.

If you only treat the feet, you miss the spine. If you only treat the spine, you miss the blood work. That is why many people have tried creams, pills, and foot soaks and still feel the same.

We look at the whole path of the nerve, from the spine to the toes, and at what is happening inside the body. Then we treat what we find. Not sure if your symptoms fit? Read our guide to numbness and tingling.

What your first visit looks like

About 45 minutes, start to finish.

We go over when it started, where you feel it, and your health history, including diabetes, thyroid, and medications.

We test sensation, reflexes, strength, and balance to see which nerves are involved.

We explain where we think it is coming from and what we recommend.

If bloodwork makes sense, we tell you what we want to check and why.

How your plan is built

Your plan is built from your exam and, when needed, your bloodwork. Most plans use more than one of the tools above.

The longer nerves stay irritated, the more balance and sleep suffer. Tell us what you are feeling and we will call you back to set up your exam.

What you can do at home, starting today

Check your feet every day. Look for cuts, blisters, or red spots, especially if feeling in your feet is reduced.

Wear shoes that fit well and protect your feet, even around the house.

Keep moving. Regular walking keeps blood flowing to the legs and feet.

Make your home safer for balance: clear the floors, add night lights, and use rails on stairs.

Keep your blood sugar in the range your physician has set, and keep taking prescribed medication unless your prescriber changes it.

05 — COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions, answered.

Do you treat peripheral neuropathy in Jacksonville?
Yes. Meridian treats peripheral neuropathy at our Southside Jacksonville and Orange Park offices. We start with a thorough exam to find where the nerve problem comes from, then build a plan that can include chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, rehab and balance exercise, and functional medicine bloodwork to look for drivers like blood sugar, vitamin B12, and thyroid.
Can a chiropractor help with neuropathy?
Yes. Numbness and tingling can start in the spine, along a single nerve, or in the long nerves of both feet. A chiropractor trained in neurological testing can tell those apart. When the source is in the spine, adjustments and decompression take pressure off the nerve. When it is driven by something inside the body, our functional medicine team looks for it with bloodwork.
What causes peripheral neuropathy?
The most common driver is blood sugar, from diabetes or prediabetes. Low vitamin B12, an underactive thyroid, some medications, and heavy alcohol use can also affect the nerves. A pinched nerve in the neck or low back and nerves trapped at the wrist, elbow, or ankle cause similar symptoms. Finding which one applies to you is the first step.
What happens at my first visit?
Plan on about 45 minutes. We go over your symptoms and health history, then test sensation, reflexes, strength, and balance. You leave knowing where we think the problem starts, what we recommend, and whether bloodwork makes sense for you.
Do I still need to see my regular doctor?
Yes. Our care works alongside your physician, not instead of them. Keep taking any medication you are prescribed unless your prescriber changes it, and keep your diabetes or thyroid follow-ups. We are happy to share what we find with your doctor.
Does insurance cover neuropathy treatment?
We work with Florida Blue, Cigna, Humana, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna. In-network status varies by plan. We verify your benefits before your first visit.
When is numbness an emergency?
Call 911 for sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, a drooping face, or trouble speaking. Go to the emergency room for numbness in the groin or inner thighs with loss of bladder or bowel control, or for weakness or numbness that is spreading quickly. If you have diabetes and a foot sore that will not heal, see your physician right away.
