Functional medicine or your regular doctor?
This is not a choice between them. Keep your physician. The question is what functional medicine adds when your labs are normal and you still feel unwell.
Primary care is built to diagnose and manage disease, coordinate specialists, handle acute illness, and deliver preventive screening. Functional medicine is built to investigate why a system is functioning poorly when no disease has been diagnosed — which is why it often gets used when someone feels unwell but standard labs come back normal. They answer different questions. Functional medicine is not a substitute for a primary care physician and should not replace one.
What each one is actually for.
Functional medicine
A root-cause approach investigating why body systems are underperforming, using longer visits and broader testing than a standard appointment allows.
- Persistent symptoms when standard labs read as normal
- Digestive problems without a diagnosed disease
- Fatigue, sleep disruption, and stress-response patterns
- Hormone and metabolic questions needing more than a snapshot
- Patients wanting a longer visit and a systems-level look
- Not a replacement for primary care, and not equipped for acute illness
- Specialty testing is usually out of pocket
- The field varies widely in rigor between practitioners
- Does not manage established disease requiring pharmaceutical treatment
Primary care
Your medical home — diagnosis, disease management, prescribing, screening, referrals, and acute care.
- Diagnosing and managing established disease
- Prescription management and medication review
- Preventive screening and vaccination
- Acute illness and injury
- Coordinating specialist referrals
- Visit lengths rarely allow deep investigation of vague, multi-system symptoms
- Testing focuses on identifying disease rather than characterizing function
- "Your labs are normal" is a common and unsatisfying endpoint when you still feel unwell
Side by side
| Functional medicine | Primary care | |
|---|---|---|
| Core question | Why is this system underperforming? | Is there a disease, and how is it managed? |
| Typical visit | Long initial intake covering history, diet, sleep, stress. | Short and focused on the presenting problem. |
| Testing | Standard labs plus specialty functional panels. | Standard diagnostic labs and imaging. |
| Main tools | Nutrition, targeted supplementation, sleep, stress and lifestyle protocols. | Prescription medication, procedures, referrals. |
| Insurance | Visits sometimes covered; specialty testing usually not. | Generally covered. |
| At Meridian | Provided at both locations. | Handled by your primary care physician — keep yours, and we work alongside it. |
Keep your physician. Genuinely.
The failure mode in this field is a patient who drops their primary care physician because a functional practitioner made them feel heard, and then goes years without screening or disease management. We do not want that patient outcome and we will say so at the first visit.
- Meridian does not provide primary care, general prescribing, or management of chronic disease. Prescribing within our own weight loss and functional medicine programs is a different thing from being your medical home.
- Keep your annual physical, your screenings, and your prescriber.
- We work alongside your physician and are glad to share findings with them.
- If something we find belongs to a specialist, we refer rather than treat around it.
When to see a physician rather than book with us.
Functional medicine is not the right entry point for these. Some belong in an emergency department today.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or a sudden severe headache — emergency care
- Rapid unexplained weight loss, or persistent fever
- Blood in stool or urine
- Symptoms of a new or uncontrolled diagnosed disease, such as diabetes
- Any mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm — contact 988 or emergency services
- Pregnancy complications

Not sure which one you need?
A visit starts with an exam, not a treatment plan. If what you need is something we do not provide, we will tell you and point you to who does.
